Equus caballus

Horse, pony

This is the species record for Equus caballus which is generally accepted as the lowest biological taxon or classification for this form of life. The record is generally titled using the binomial, or two-part name, constructed from the genus; Equus, the first part and the species; caballus, the second part. However things are never that straight forward and variation within the species can add subspecies (in the case of zoology) and variety, sub variety and formae (in the case of botany) to the later part of the binomial name in order to determine an exact classification.

The user has to be aware that there is not complete agreement around the world regarding both the classification of particular species nor indeed the structure of the overall classification system itself. Even that which is agreed is subject to almost constant change and reclassification.

Note: Species binomial names are by agreed convention written in italics as is the case here.

Scientific Accreditation

This database of World Flora and Fauna has taken nearly a year to get to this level of detail and much research but we are aware that the primary research was conducted by many others who were/are experts in the various academic disciplines needed to decide what goes where. We are therefore now collating our source material and have already added many of the names of those persons to these pages.

In a similar vein much progress is being made in the field of taxonomy especially as a result of the advances in DNA related technologies. This means that what we thought was in the right place a few years ago is no longer correct. Our users need to be aware that the data displayed here may be or may have been superseded by new discoveries. As time permits we shall add the ability for the input of corrections or additions to individual species information to be made by our users, subject to moderation, in the hope that we can keep the data as up to date as possible.

If you are knowledgeable with this particular species and you do spot an important error we do invite you to advise us of the issue using our FEEDBACK form.
